Networks and Cyber Security: Unit Exam B
Why networks are useful, wired and wireless, what happens when you visit a website, encryption, defences against threats, and star networks.
Instructions
- Time allowed
- 25 minutes
- Total marks
- 25
- Calculator
- No calculator is permitted.
- Answer all the questions.
- The number of marks for each question is shown in brackets. Use it as a guide to how much to write.
- The clock at the top counts down from the real time allowed. When it reaches zero the paper is locked and marked, as it would be collected in the exam hall.
- Read every question to the end before answering. Where a question says tick two boxes, tick exactly two: ticking more than asked scores nothing. Type one word and number answers carefully, because they are marked exactly.
Questions
Answer every question, then finish the paper to have it marked. Marking as you go teaches you far less.
Tick one box.
- LB Files and printers can be shared
Sharing files, printers and an internet connection is the point of a network.
Tick one box.
- LD A router
The router joins the home network to the internet service provider.
| Wired | Wireless | |
|---|---|---|
| Uses Ethernet cables | ||
| Lets a phone connect from anywhere in the house | ||
| Usually faster and less affected by walls | ||
| Can be picked up by anyone in range, so it must be encrypted |
Tick one box in each row.
- LUses Ethernet cables: Wired
- LLets a phone connect from anywhere in the house: Wireless
- LUsually faster and less affected by walls: Wired
- LCan be picked up by anyone in range, so it must be encrypted: Wireless
Cables are faster and more reliable. Wireless is convenient but must be encrypted.
- Llocal area network
- Lwide area network
Local area network and wide area network.
| Step | Order |
|---|---|
| The web server sends the page back in packets | |
| You type the web address into the browser | |
| The browser sends a request to the web server's IP address | |
| A DNS server looks up the IP address for the name |
- LSteps 1 and 2 in the right places: 1, 2
- LSteps 3 and 4 in the right places: 3, 4
Type the address, DNS finds the IP address, the browser requests the page, and the server sends it back.
Tick one box.
- LA A small piece of data carrying the address it is going to
Each packet carries part of the data plus addressing information.
- LIf they are intercepted or stolen, the attacker cannot read them
- LOnly someone with the key can decrypt them, so the accounts stay protected
Data can be intercepted on its way or stolen from a server. If the passwords are encrypted, whoever takes them sees only scrambled data they cannot read without the key, so the accounts stay safe.
| Firewall | Anti-malware | Strong password | Staff training | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blocks unauthorised traffic from the internet | ||||
| Scans files and removes malware | ||||
| Makes a brute force attack take far longer | ||||
| Helps people spot phishing emails |
Tick one box in each row.
- LBlocks unauthorised traffic from the internet: Firewall
- LScans files and removes malware: Anti-malware
- LMakes a brute force attack take far longer: Strong password
- LHelps people spot phishing emails: Staff training
Each defence answers a different threat: traffic, malicious files, guessing and tricking people.
Tick one box.
- LC Software designed to damage a computer or steal data
Malware is malicious software.
Tick one box.
- LB The address starts with https://
https means the connection is encrypted.
- LIt encrypts or locks the files on the victim's computer
- LIt demands a payment to unlock them, with no guarantee it will
Ransomware encrypts the files on a computer so they cannot be opened, then demands a payment, the ransom, for the key, with no guarantee the files will ever be returned.
- L8
In a star, every computer has its own cable to the switch.
Tick one box.
- LC Only that computer loses its connection
Each computer has its own cable, so only that one is cut off.
Tick one box.
- LA Phoning someone and pretending to be from IT support to get their password
Social engineering targets people rather than computers.
- Linternet service provider
Internet service provider.
This is an original Key Stage 3 assessment. Most questions are closed, so the marking is exact, and the written answers are marked against a mark scheme in the same style as a GCSE paper, so the format is familiar long before it counts.
