Web Development: Unit Exam A
HTML tags and attributes, page structure, links and images, CSS rules, classes and ids, external stylesheets and accessibility.
Instructions
- Time allowed
- 25 minutes
- Total marks
- 25
- Calculator
- No calculator is permitted.
- Answer all the questions.
- The number of marks for each question is shown in brackets. Use it as a guide to how much to write.
- The clock at the top counts down from the real time allowed. When it reaches zero the paper is locked and marked, as it would be collected in the exam hall.
- Read every question to the end before answering. Where a question says tick two boxes, tick exactly two: ticking more than asked scores nothing. Type one word and number answers carefully, because they are marked exactly.
Questions
Answer every question, then finish the paper to have it marked. Marking as you go teaches you far less.
- Lhypertext markup language
HyperText Markup Language.
- Lcascading style sheets
Cascading Style Sheets.

|---|---|---|---|---|

Tick one box in each row.
- LMakes a link to another page: <a>
- LShows a picture: <img>
- LThe main heading: <h1>
- LA paragraph of text: <p>
a is a link (anchor), img is an image, h1 is the top heading and p is a paragraph.
Tick one box.
- LC Inside <head>, in a <title> tag
The head holds information about the page, including its title.
- LContact us
The text between the tags is what appears on the page.
- Lcontact.html
The href attribute holds the address: contact.html.
Tick one box.
- LB alt
alt text describes the image.
- LScreen readers read it aloud, so blind or partially sighted users know what the image shows
- LIt is shown if the image fails to load, and it helps search engines
A screen reader reads the alt text aloud, so someone who cannot see the image still knows what it shows. It is also displayed if the image fails to load, and search engines use it to understand the page.
Tick one box.
- LA p { color: blue; }
A CSS rule is a selector, then the property and value in curly brackets.
Tick one box.
- LD A class can be used on many elements; an id should be used on only one
An id is unique on a page; a class can be shared.
- L#
# selects by id. A full stop selects by class.
Tick one box.
- LD A bulleted list
ul is an unordered, bulleted list; ol is a numbered list.
- LChanging the one file updates the style of every page
- LEvery page looks consistent, and pages are smaller because the style is not repeated
One change to the stylesheet restyles every page at once, which saves a great deal of time. Every page also looks consistent, and the pages are smaller because the style is not repeated in each one.
| Helps accessibility | Harms accessibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Light grey text on a white background | ||
| Headings used in order, h1 then h2 | ||
| Links that say click here instead of where they go | ||
| Descriptive alt text on images |
Tick one box in each row.
- LLight grey text on a white background: Harms accessibility
- LHeadings used in order, h1 then h2: Helps accessibility
- LLinks that say click here instead of where they go: Harms accessibility
- LDescriptive alt text on images: Helps accessibility
Low contrast and vague link text make pages harder to use. Ordered headings and alt text help screen reader users.
- L<ol>
<ol> starts an ordered, numbered list.
Tick one box.
- LC <body>
Everything visible on the page goes in the body.
Tick one box.
- LB font-size
font-size sets the size of the text.
This is an original Key Stage 3 assessment. Most questions are closed, so the marking is exact, and the written answers are marked against a mark scheme in the same style as a GCSE paper, so the format is familiar long before it counts.
